The National Indian Country Training Initiative, together with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, is pleased to announce they are co-sponsoring the Indian Country Criminal Trial Advocacy Seminar. The seminar is March 19-23, 2018, at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Lodging and travel accommodations will be provided by the Department of Justice. Note: Students selected to attend the postponed September 2017 course who have already affirmatively responded that they are available to attend the March 2018 course do not need to submit a new nomination form.
This seminar is an intensive advocacy skill program designed for tribal prosecutors and tribal prosecutors cross-designated as Special Assistant United States Attorneys with little to no trial experience and who will be responsible for the trial of criminal cases. This seminar utilizes lectures, skill exercises, critiques, and trial strategy sessions. Topics covered include preparation and presentation of opening statements and closing arguments, as well as direct and cross-examination and handling exhibits. This session will use a domestic violence and narcotics trafficking fact pattern and experienced tribal, state and federal prosecutors will be faculty. The Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure will be used throughout the training.
Important note: Pre-course reading of the case facts and preparation are required of the participants selected to attend. Students selected to attend will be required to participate in webinars or other distance education formats prior to the week of the class. Early departures will not be approved due to courtroom exercises schedule. Please copy and complete the attached form for each of your nominees and E-Mail it to Delores McCarter, Office of Legal Education. Nominations are due by January 26, 2018. The Office of Legal Education will review all nominations and will send an e-mail advising nominees of their selection on or about February 5, 2018. Selected nominees will also receive travel and lodging information.
