VOICES FROM THE LITIGATION FRONTLINES: The Future of the Anti-Trafficking Movement – Thursday, 29 October 2020; 10:00 am – 11:00 am EST. Dr. Maria Grazia Giammarinaro has just ended six successful years as the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. From 2014 to 2020, Dr. Giammarinaro focused on the systemic nature of global trafficking and highlighted the failures of anti-trafficking policies merely based on a law enforcement approach. She reported extensively on the trafficking of migrant women and refugees, pushed governments to strengthen support systems for victims of trafficking, and warned against the failure to hold corporations accountable for forced labor in their supply chains. In her last months, Dr. Giammarinaro implored governments to act quickly to address the labor exploitation exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. In her final report to the U.N. General Assembly, Dr. Giammarinaro provided recommendations to achieve a human rights and victim-centered approach to combat human trafficking.
