Popular culture often depicts the criminal trial and sentencing as the “end of the story”. For crime victims, however, they are often connected with the justice system for a long time beyond these points. At each post-conviction juncture – whether parole, probation, appeal, habeas or post-conviction relief – victims’ rights including the rights to privacy, protection, notice, presence and restitution, are likely at issue.
National Crime Victim Law Institute’s Legal Team works to provide technical assistance on the meaning and scope of post-conviction victims’ rights in the form of legal research, writing and strategic and policy advice for attorneys, advocates, judges and legislatures across the country.
